Charcoal pastel drawing for untitled_001. Partway through the session I felt I'd overcooked the abstract marks in the background - this is also intended to be a guide for a painting - so out came the paper to panel over the unwanted sections
I find charcoal / charcoal pastel is great for tonal depth and dynamic, gestural mark-making
I gravitated to Conté early on in the life-drawing room; it aided the transition from relying on line to describe form to begin carving with light instead
